New Knitted Casual Wear Industry Standard Released in China

China has issued a new version of its industry standard for knitted casual wear, which came into effect on July 1, 2020.

Published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, FZ/T 73020-2019 covers products that are primarily manufactured using knitted fabrics. It does not apply to products made for infants aged 36 months or under.

There are multiple updates in FZ/T 73020-2019, in comparison to the 2012 iteration. Alterations include:

  • Instructions that children’s product use must comply with a specified clause in GB 31701
  • Terms and definitions for mini shorts and fluorescence color
  • Labeling rules for sizes beyond the standard
  • Applicable scope for the colorfastness of natural color or bleached fabrics
  • Assessment for results and single sample
  • Colorfastness for linings
  • Test items for appearance after washing
  • Requirements and test methods for the staining degree of soap solution
  • Requirements covering colorfastness to light for apparel in fluorescence color

The new standard contains adjustments to:

  • Normative references
  • Requirements for colorfastness to rubbing, light, dry-cleaning, and light of textiles wetted with artificial perspiration
  • Requirements covering pilling
  • Requirements covering spirality for tops after laundering
  • Measurement description for spirality after laundering

Revisions include:

  • Applicable scope
  • Test method for colorfastness to transfer in joints
  • Sewing requirements
  • Specification of sampling number

The new standard has removed:

  • Net dry content requirement for fiber content
  • Annex A of FZ/T 73020-2012
  • Requirements for dresses and short skirts
  • Requirements for colorfastness for prints and pyrographics

The standard contains technical requirements relating to:

  • Appearance: defects, dimension tolerance, dimension difference in symmetrical position, and sewing requirements
  • Internal quality: fiber content, formaldehyde content, pH value, odor, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines, bursting strength, pilling, dimension change after laundering, dimension change after dry-cleaning, spirality after laundering, appearance after laundering, and multiple requirements relating to colorfastness

Stakeholders are advised to now check their knitted casual wear conforms to the latest version of FZ/T 73020.
