SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 015.24 to provide an overview of recent updates to Canada’s law on food contact glass and ceramics.
Regulations Amending Certain Department of Health Regulations (Miscellaneous Program) (SOR/2023-247) was issued in December 2023. Among other things, it updates with the following standards in relation to the Glazed Ceramics and Glassware Regulations (SOR/2016-175):
- ISO 6486-1:2019 ‘Ceramic ware, glass ware and glass dinnerware in contact with food – Release of lead and cadmium – Part 1: Test Method’
- ASTM C927-80(2019)e1 ‘Standard Test Method for Lead and Cadmium Extracted from the Lip and Rim Area of Glass Tumblers Externally Decorated with Ceramic Glass Enamels’
Both standards are now legally accepted methods for demonstrating compliance with the migration of lead and cadmium in food contact glass and ceramic materials and articles under the regulation.
This update came into effect on November 24, 2023.
