US EPA Proposes Further Updates to Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed revisions to two additional voluntary consensus standards for formaldehyde emissions in composite wood products.

The EPA first issued a proposed rule to update seven voluntary consensus standards falling under 40 CFR 770 ‘Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products’ (Toxic Substances Control Act Title VI (TSCA Title VI)) in March 2022.

However, since the conclusion of the consultation period for those standards, two additional voluntary consensus standards have been updated. Therefore, on September 20, 2022, the EPA published a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking (SNPRM) in the Federal Register (87 FR 57432) relating to:

  • A208.1-2016 updated to ANSI A208.1-2022 ‘Particleboard’
  • ANSI A208.2-2016 updated to ANSI A208.2-2022 ‘Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) for Interior Applications’

The EPA will accept comments until October 20, 2022.
