The regulation follows the 2022 COP-10 decision (Decision SC-10/13) to phase out PFHxS and similar substances. PFHxS, a member of the PFAS chemical family, is widely used in textiles, firefighting foams, food packaging and non-stick products due to its resistance to heat, oil and chemicals.

The updated legislation (OGM No. 44/2025), published on May 9, 2025, prohibits the production, import and use of PFHxS and related compounds (CAS 355-46-4 and others). The ban takes effect eight days after publication, reinforcing national chemical safety standards.

According to the update:
- The ban covers both substances and products containing PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds
- Manufacturers and importers should review supply chains to ensure compliance

Geneva (June 11, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 075.25, summarizing the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) final regulation implementing its law on ‘Products Containing PFAS’. These rules, which took effect on May 6, 2025, set out restrictions, notification procedures and conditions for currently unavoidable use (CUU) of PFAS in consumer products.
