SGS Summarizes New ASTM Standard for Beach Umbrellas and Anchor Devices

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 065.24 to keep stakeholders informed about a new consumer safety specification published by ASTM for beach umbrellas and anchor devices.

Designated ASTM F3681-24, the new standard was developed by the ASTM Market Umbrellas Subcommittee (F15.79) and approved on April 1, 2024. It addresses several hazards identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), including lacerations and impalement by the shaft/pole when the beach umbrella is airborne due to wind.

Beach umbrella is defined as a removable device installed in or on the sand on a beach, consisting of a canopy supported by a single shaft/pole, used as protection against sun, rain or other potential weather.

Anchor device is defined as a device that is attached to or integrated into the umbrella pole and is secured in or on the sand on a beach, which enables the umbrella to perform in an open upright or angled position and prevents the umbrella from becoming airborne.

The standard has several requirements relating to:
- Attachment strength
- Marking and labeling
- Instructional literature

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 065.24 contains a helpful summary of the requirements in the new standard, including examples of the on-product label and compliance labeling that must be used.
