SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that Ukraine has released a new regulation covering chemicals in elastomer and rubber teats and soothers for infants.

Issued on October 28, 2022, Order No. 1734 of September 24, 2022 (Order No. 1734/2022) covers the release of N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances in teats and soothers that contain elastomer and rubber materials.

Requirements in the legislation include:

• N-nitrosamines: no more than 0.01mg/kg
• N-Nitrosatable substances: no more than 0.1 mg/kg

SGS has published SafeGuardS 136/22 to help stakeholders understand the provisions in Order No. 1734/2022. These include:

• Description of the procedure for the preparation of saliva test solution
• Details of the sampling procedure and indications of the type of instrument to be used for determining the release of N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances

The new law will apply from April 28, 2023, and products not in compliance with the requirements will be prohibited from January 1, 2024.
