SGS Summarizes Revision of Chemicals Ordinance on Substances and Mixtures in Switzerland

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has provided details of Switzerland’s revision of its national Chemical Ordinance (ChemO, RS/SR 813.11). ChemO regulates dangerous substances and preparations (mixtures).

- Safety data sheets (SDS)
- Use of substances of very high concern (SVHC)

Official Collection 2024 404 (RO 2024 404) was issued on August 6, 2024, revising ChemO Annex 2 (Technical requirements for CLP) and Annex 3 (Candidate List of SVHC). It becomes effective from September 1, 2024, and provides transitional provisions for the CLP of substances and mixtures.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 130.24 provides further details of RO 2024 404 and useful links to its French, German and Italian versions.

SGS Summarizes EPA Proposals to Ban 1 Bromopropane in Most Consumer Uses

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has highlighted the USA’s proposed ban of 1-Bromopropane in most consumer uses.

1-Bromopropane is used widely in consumer cleaning and degreasing products as well as automotive care products and insulation. Exposure to the chemical has been found to cause serious health effects from cancer to liver, kidney and nervous system damage and reduced fertility.

The US Environmental Protection Agency announced a list of the first ten chemicals for risk assessment and mitigation under its amended Toxic Substances Act (TSCA) in November 2016. Rules have already been proposed for carbon tetrachloride, N-methylpyrrolidone, perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene (SG 96/24, SG 76/23, SG 154/23), and finalized for asbestos and methylene chloride (SG 77/24).

A de minimis level for formulations has not been included in the proposal, unlike other EPA draft or finalized rules on solvents. Workplace requirements in most industrial and commercial uses are specified. September 23, 2024, is the deadline for comments on the proposal.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 131.24 provides a useful table summarizing proposed measures, requirements, affected applications and effective dates.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 131.24 for more details.
