Geneseo, NY, USA, March 11, 2020 -- Cottone Auctions’ Spring Fine Art & Antiques auction on Saturday, March 28th in Geneseo will feature fine selections from Dr. Ronald and Krista Reed of Rochester, New York. The couple was awarded Rochester Landmark Society's Historic Home Award in 2019 for their commitment to the restoration and preservation of their lovely, historic East Avenue home.

The Reeds enjoyed traveling the world and acquiring wonderful antiques from galleries and dealers, both domestic and abroad. The sale also features 20th century design from the estate of Inger-Marie Tanier and George Tanier. George Tanier was an outstanding figure in the post-war Danish furniture export trade. Fittingly, he was knighted by His Majesty, King Frederik IX.

The auction will include more than 300 lots of fine art, Tiffany Studios lamps, 20th Century art and design, decorative arts, furniture, Oriental rugs, Asian objects, swords, weaponry and more.

The sale will be held online and in Cottone’s gallery at 120 Court Street in Geneseo, starting at 12 noon Eastern time. Modern design will be led by an early Finn Juhl “Chieftan” teak and leather armchair, made by Niels Vodder (est. $15,000-$25,000). Other 20th century items include a Madura Pablo Picasso pitcher, titled Woman’s Face (est. $7,000-$10,000), and works by Sam Francis, Hans Wegner, Tommi Parzinger, J.L. Møller, Paul Evans, Alexander Girard and Charles and Ray Eames.

The many outstanding Tiffany Studios (N.Y.) lamps from various collections include a fine and rare “Rose” table lamp with a 24-inch shade on a bronze adjustable library base (est. $75,000-$125,000); a fresh to market “Dragonfly” table lamp with 20-inch shade (est. $40,000-$60,000); four rare “Dolphin” sconces (est. $20,000-$30,000); and an all-original 18-light “Lily” lamp with favrile shades (est. $30,000-$50,000). Lamps by the noted maker Handel will also be offered.

Furniture from the Reeds’ collection will include a fine and rare English writing desk and sewing table, commissioned for Queen Victoria as a princess, originally in Buckingham Palace, London and purchased from M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans (est. $10,000-$15,000). The piece was featured in Art & Antiques, Top 100 Treasures. Also being offered is a beautiful Biedermeier Trumpet form table and four side chairs (est. $5,000-$8,000 and $1,000-$1,500, respectively).

Also from the Reeds’ collection is a Louis XVI Style side table by the important cabinetmaker Paul Sormani (1817-1877), acquired from a dealer in Paris (est. $3,000-$5,000). Additionally, an extensive set of ten 18th century French Louis XV walnut dining chairs with silk upholstery (est. $6,000-$8,000), among other fine furnishings from their superb collection, will be sold.

Art Deco period pieces from the Reed collection include a René Lalique (1860-1945) "Noisetier" glass chandelier, purchased from Valerio Antiques (est. $8,000-$12,000), as well as other Art Deco lighting by Muller Frères (Co.), Jean Perzel and Marius-Ernest Sabino. Furnishings include a rosewood, marble and bronze sideboard, purchased from Iliad Anik (est. $5,000-$8,000), an Art Deco and swede suite, and pieces by Jules Leleu and those attributed to Eugene Printz.

The decorative art and sculpture category will include a Harriet Whitney Frishmuth bronze titled Rhapsody (est. $8,000-$12,000); a 19th century marble sculpture of a veiled lady by Italian artist Gaetano Russo (est. $5,000-$8,000); a Sèvres Louis Philippe "Chateau de Fontainebleau" tea set, circa 1838-1840 (est. $8,000-$12,000), and other fine items by Sèvres and Meissen porcelain.

Asian arts will feature a fine pair of large Japanese bronze mixed metal vases purchased from Flying Crane Antiques (est. $7,000-$10,000); a fine and rare reticulated Satsuma vase with insert (est. $7,000-$10,000); and a Mughal rock, crystal, gold, gemstone covered jar and Mughal jade tray with enamel and gold flowers (est. $6,000-$8,000 and $5,000-$7,000, respectively).

Jewelry highlights will include a gilt copper and agate box (est. $20,000-$30,000), attributed to James Cox (1723-1800); a fine late 18th or early 19th century ladies’ gold, enamel and pearl Swiss pocket watch, made for the Chinese Market with verge escapement (est. $4,000-$6,000); and a few examples of Fabergé hardstone articles, each carrying estimates of $3,000-$5,000.

Americana will features a remarkable pair of Cherokee moccasins in an outstanding state of preservation and fresh to the market (est. $15,000-$25,000); a fine Germantown eye dazzler weaving (est. $7,000-$10,000); and a portrait of young lady, attributed to John Blunt (est. $3,000-$5,000), from the estate of Dr Edward C. and Ruth P. Atwater of Rochester, N.Y.

Paintings will include an exceptional Carl Peters (1897-1980) oil on canvas, titled Elm Street, Rochester, NY, 40 inches by 32 inches, from the collection of Grant Paulsen and the late Jeffrey Their of Buffalo, N.Y. (est. $15,000-$25,000); and Aldro Thompson Hibbard’s (1886-1972), oil on canvas, Late Afternoon, Bondville, Vermont, 28 inches by 36 inches (est. $10,000-$15,000).

Oil on canvas works by Emile Gruppe (1896-1978), will include Rockport Street, 24 inches by 36 inches (est. $5,000-$8,000). Also sold will be George Gunther Hartick’s (1817-1899), oil on canvas, Ice Skating Near East Rock, New Haven, Connecticut, 32 inches by 47 inches (est. $5,000-$8,000); and a Cornelius Krieghoff (1812-1872) oil on canvas, 9 ½ inches by 12 inches (est. $10,000-$15,000).

Ancient art and antiquities will include a 2nd Century marble sculpture of young boy, which was deaccessioned from the Society of the Cincinnati in Washington, D.C. (est. $3,000-$5,000); and an Egyptian sarcophagus (est. $6,000-$8,000) from the estate of Phodis Walker of Beverly Hills.

Cranston, RI, USA, March 11, 2020 -- Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, in partnership with Coronado Trading of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho will present a two-part camera extravaganza sale on Saturday, March 28th, live in the Bruneau & Co. gallery at 63 Fourth Avenue in Cranston, and online (Part 2 only) via several bidding platforms. In all, more than 800 lots will be sold to the highest bidder without reserve.

Part 1, starting at 10 am Eastern time, is a pre-sale auction event, with more than 175 lots being offered to a live audience, with no Internet bidding. Phone and absentee bids will be accepted. Part 2, starting at 12 noon, will feature over 600 cataloged lots of 35mm and small format vintage cameras, to include rare and unusual cameras and lenses, generous boxed lots and a great selection of hard-to-find items.

All lots are from a single-owner collection out of Saratoga, Calif. It was brought to the attention of Bruneau & Co. by James Supp of Coronado Trading, who’s well-known to TV fans as a mustachioed appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. He’s also a contributor to the Bruneau podcast The Justuff League. He and a friend, Dr. Russell Young, helped catalog and organize the sale.

“It was such an exciting time getting to work on a vast collection such as this,” Mr. Supp said. “Collectors will be coming out of the woodwork to get their hands on some of these lots. It was also a great opportunity to work with Bruneau & Co. on a collaborative effort. Always fun working as a team.”

Dr. Young added, “After organizing this collection, you pretty much have the spectrum of 20th century photographic history in terms of cameras. Looking at these cameras was like walking into a major museum.”

Kevin Bruneau, the president of Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, expressed awe and gratitude that the collection made its way to him from across the country. “It’s going to be amazing to see all the collectors from around the world who pay attention to the auction,” he said. “There’s truly an eclectic mix of cameras with some models that I’m sure will bring a surprise across the block.”

Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. specialist and auctioneer, likened the sale to a prior one in a different category when he said, “Just like the antique telephones, this auction is going to be an unbelievable learning experience. I can’t wait to see what pops and drives collectors crazy. This is a big change of pace from toys, comics and fine art. It’s going to be an awesome experience.”

Fans of vintage Canon cameras will be treated to a Canon Model IV S 35mm SLR camera, circa 1952-1953, including neck strap, skylight filter and lens cap, plus one Serenar 50mm f/1.8 lens; and a Canon Model II B 35mm SLR camera, circa 1949-52, marked “Made in Occupied Japan”, with a fitted leather case and Canon Serenar 50mm f/3.5 lens. Both have estimates of $300-$500.

Lenses will feature a Kern Macro-Switar AR 50mm f/1.9 lens for Alpha mount, with lens hood, lens cap and original box (est. $800-$1,200); a Kodak Ektar 35mm f/3.3 lens for Ektra mount with no signs of wear and perfect glass (est. $400-$600); and a Voigtländer Nokton lens 50mm f/1.5, for Leica L39 LTM mount, an early legendary Leica lens (est. $400-$600).

Zeiss is a name that’s coveted among camera collectors and aficionados. Lots will include:

- A group of three Zeiss Ikon Contax III 543/24 35mm rangefinder cameras. Includes one fitted leather case and three lenses: Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f/2.8, Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 50mm f/2, and Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 50mm f/2 with lens hood (est. $300-$600).

Paoli, PA, USA, February 29, 2020 -- A striking oil portrait painting of a young girl by Russian artist Alexei Harlamoff, a handsome William Gilbert Jewelers wall regulator clock, a pair of fine elaborate zitan folding chairs with dragon arms, and a gorgeous bronze enamel censer in a presentation box are a taste of what’s in Converse Auctions’ East Meets West Auction on Friday, March 13th at 10 am EST.

The auction will be online-only, but previews will be held in Converse Auctions’ new gallery located at 1 Spring Street in Paoli, not far off Interstate 76 and just outside of Philadelphia, north and west of the city. Previews will be held Tuesday through Thursday, March 10-12, from 10-4 Eastern time. Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. The auction is packed with 579 lots of fine American, European, African, Chinese and other Asian items – a tantalizing blend of objects from the East alongside items from the Western culture (hence the title ‘East Meets West’). All lots have a starting bid of $10, a tactic designed to encourage newcomers to the collecting world, and old pros as well, to bid early and bid often.

Items from the East include Chinese fine furniture, bronzes, carvings, glass, paintings, jewelry, wooden boxes and brush pots, textiles, vintage Japanese textile kimonos, robes, obis and accessories, scrolls, prints, porcelain, books and cryptomeria.

Items from the West will feature fine art paintings and prints by Vlaminck, Cope, Sobossek, Burliuk, Dauchot and others, plus Mexican child portraits and Haitian paintings, a torso attributed to Brancusi, furniture and sterling silver (including a Reed & Barton service for eight).

Also offered will be clocks, European and American pottery and porcelain, Mid-Century Modern lots, art glass, decoys, insulators, African tribal artifacts, books, jewelry, vintage accessories (to include a lovely Hermés scarf), large Persian Tabriz and other rugs, and many other great items.

The oil on canvas portrait by Alexei Harlamoff (Russian, 1840-1925), depicts a young girl wearing traditional ethnic dress, her soulful eyes staring directly at the viewer as she delicately touches the flower garland that crowns her head. The 28 inch by 34 ½ inch painting is signed lower right “Harlamoff” (est. $6,000-$9,000). The William Gilbert Jewelers wall regulator, 80 inches tall, has a pinwheel time only escapement with grid iron pendulum (est. $5,000-$8,000).

The elaborately decorated gilt bronze lidded censer with beast handles, 16 ½ inches tall, has an estimate of $8,000-$12,000. It has colorful accent characters, bats, flowers and tendrils on the body and lid, plus a presentation box. The two zitan folding chairs boast heavily carved legs, arm rests and back, all in a dragon and cloud motif. The backsplat has a dragon carved into it and the back of the chair is carved in a ruyi with flaming pearl. The pair should finish at $3,000-$5,000.

A pair of oil on canvas portraits of young girls, each one rendered by a Mexican artist and with an estimate of $1,000-$1,500, is sure to get paddles wagging. One is a rare painting by Horacio Renteria Rocha (Mexican, 1912-1972). It shows a girl elaborately dressed, holding chicks in her uplifted apron, as hens, chicks and puppies play at her feet. The other, by an unknown artist, is of a girl in fancy clothes with a toy dog. Her name is in a banner: “Nina Delores Vakao, AD 1890.”

An elaborately carved huanghuali lotus cabinet, carved all over in three-dimensional designs, is expected to change hands for $2,000-$4,000. The three top doors lift up and slide in, and there are two drawers underneath. The drawers are carved in lotus blossoms and leaves. Also, a bronze Buddha with a well-worn patina, accented in gilt bronze and bezel set turquoise stones, has an estimate of $800-$1,200. The figure is on a lotus petal and is in a custom wood presentation box.

Two very different lots share identical estimates of $2,000-$4,000. One is a large Persian Tabriz Oriental rug, 108 ½ inches by 150 inches, executed in dark reds with central flower and tendril motifs surrounded by various flower and tendril borders on blue backgrounds. The other is a lovely carved marble torso of a female, done in a style consistent with Constantin Brancusi’s stylized, simplified art. The unauthenticated piece is signed on the plinth, “C. Brancusi 1943”.

A short black silk Japanese kimono, or Haori gown robe, made around 1970 and decorated with cranes and flowers, 48 inches by 55 inches, should gavel for $100-$200. Also, a complete set of eleven The Tale of Genji books by Murasaki Shikibu, in Japanese, translated by Tanizaki jun and published in 1950, each book individually slipcased, will be offered up as one lot (est. $40-$80).

An oil on board painting of a village scene overlooking the sea by Maurice de Vlaminck (French, 1876-1958), signed lower left but unauthenticated, unframed and measuring 17 inches by 13 ½ inches, carries a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$3,000; while a pastel Parisian café scene by the French artist Gabriel Dauchot (1927-2005), featuring a beautifully dressed couchette sitting at a table while a server stands behind her, undated, 22 ½ inches by 28 inches, should hit $300-$500.

A mahogany slant-top desk with two over three drawers, plus a top cupboard with an arched top and Eastlake style brasses, likely marriage, with two adjustable shelves and two drawers, has an estimate of $800-$1,200. Also, a pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern Danish bent wood arm chairs, measuring 27 inches by 27 inches by 31 inches, will be sold as one lot (est. $500-$800).
